Clay-Battelle Health Services Association Welcomes Our Newest Dentist
Clay-Battelle Health Services Association (CBHSA) is thrilled to announce the addition of Dr. Mike Tomoroksa to the clinic. After graduating from LeMoyne College with his Bachelor of Science degree, Dr. Tomoroksa knew he had a passion for art and working with his hands. This is what led him to further his education in dentistry. After completing his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree at West Virginia University, he discovered his love of the Mountain State and the opportunities to enjoy his hobbies of snowboarding, swimming, and fishing. Now, he is joining the team at Clay-Battelle and is accepting new clients.
We recently interviewed Dr. Mike to learn more about why he chose the profession of dentistry, the importance of preventative dental care, and how he uses being bilingual as an asset.
Q: What inspired you to pursue a career in dentistry?
Dr. Mike: The first time I really considered dentistry as a career was after I got braces in high school. Before braces, my teeth were extremely crooked, and I was always embarrassed about my smile. After completing my treatment, I noticed the impact on my confidence and being able to smile around people without trying to cover my teeth. This experience truly inspired me to pursue dentistry because it was such a great feeling for me. I wanted to be able to provide the same for my patients and bring confidence back for many of them.
Q: How do you help patients who may feel nervous or anxious about visiting the dentist?
Dr. Mike: Many patients are nervous about dental visits because of previous scary dental experiences and not understanding what the dentist is doing. For new patients, it’s my goal to introduce myself and explain everything to the patient in a way that is understandable to them. I always encourage patients to ask as many questions as they want to make sure they are comfortable. During procedures, I often say what I am doing out loud as a way to keep the patient informed and have a general idea of what I am working on.
Q: How does CBHSA’s dental team support whole-person care alongside medical, pharmacy, and behavioral health services?
Dr. Mike: CBHSA is a fantastic community that works together in a way to provide patients with the best overall care. When we see patients who require care beyond dentistry, we make sure to tell them about our other great services. Having all of these different departments close by simplifies the process for patients, making them more likely to seek care for their other needs. CBHSA has some of the most welcoming colleagues I’ve met, which makes patients feel comfortable, welcomed, and accepted.
Q: What do you enjoy doing when you’re not at work?
Dr. Mike: I love anything outdoors! I enjoy hiking, swimming, fishing, snowboarding, and paddleboarding. I also love to cook, but do not ask me to bake! Pottery is another hobby I enjoy to wind down after work. I took pottery classes in high school and have continued to make bowls, vases, mugs, and other sculptures ever since.
Q: What’s one thing you’d like the community to know about you?
Dr. Mike: I am a first-generation American. My parents immigrated to the United States more than 20 years ago from Ukraine. Being bilingual, I love seeing any patients who speak Ukrainian and struggle with the English language. I’ve helped several Ukrainian-speaking patients during my time at WVU School of Dentistry, and it was always rewarding to help someone with a language barrier and who speaks the language I grew up with.
We are excited for Dr. Mike to join the team and contribute his unique skillset and passions. He is now booking patients and seeing patients at our Blacksville location. For more info and to book an appointment, contact us: cbhealthwv.org/services/dental/
